The Miami Herald recently reported, “About 46 percent of all U.S. 15-to-19-year-olds have had sex at least once, according to a study released in 2006 by te Guttmacher Institute. Nearly 750,000 U.S. girls between 15 and 19 get pregnant each year.” I wrote an invited chapter on the need for, the evidence for, and argument for abstinence sex education in public schools in an academic book on controversial issues in education. At another time, I might write a blog for you summarizing what I discovered from the research on abstinence education.
But for now, I have a question for you: Have you heard of the group, “Pure Reality”?
A Pure Reality “Treasure Key Ceremony” held in Miami a couple weeks ago. 24 young men and 60 young women between the ages of 12 and 26 held a golden key that they intend as a gift for their future marriage partner. Clutching their keys, they took this oath of purity,
“By God’s grace I hereby lock my heart, my body, my desires, my love for you with this Treasure Key, and I promise to remain sexually pure and to abstain from all forms of sexually immoral behaviors … until the day we say, ‘I do.’”
The Pure Reality group is not satisfied with just having teens make a promise of sexual abstinence before marriage. Some research evidence suggests that an oath of sexual purity has some effect, but for many teens, the oath by itself is either weak or, in some cases, rather powerless. So the Pure Reality groups do much more. They see the oath as just one step towards helping teens save their body for the person they will someday love enough to make the commitment to stay together in marriage “till death do us part.”
According to the Miami Herald newspaper, the founder Dominique Diambosis, said, “Pure Reality is about valuing your life and setting goals for it. It doesn’t come easily. Purity is hard work, daily work.” After reading about Pure Reality in the Miami Herald newspaper, I checked out the group’s website at www.purereality.org where I found this description of the group:
“Pure Reality is a biblically sound, character based campaign that educates, defines and explores Gods design for sex and a lifestyle of purity. This campaign is fun filled with highly interactive activities and conferences that go beyond the promotion of abstinence to reveal strategies for living a life of sexual integrity and teaches the keys to the process of purity. It focuses on the realization that Gods master plan is obtained by a living vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ and the indwelling of His Holy Spirit.”
“Pure Reality will utilize peer, parental and community recognition awards and techniques to,
* Enforce the oath of purity
* Mentor other teens
* Educate teens and young adults in churches and schools for community hours
* Promote life skills, self worth and confidence”
But what does Pure Reality have to offer the many teens who have already had sex before marriage? I found out that a teen doesn’t have to be a virgin to join. Pure Reality fully accepts non-virgins and offers realistic solutions for them too. The website helps such teens to see the value of renewed abstinence after having had sex before marriage:
“The Pure Reality campaign brings hope and a support structure to those who may have fallen into any category of sexual indiscretion or addiction teaching that a life of renewed abstinence is possible. A healthy line of communication and accountability between children, pre-teens, teens, young adults, peers, and parents is emphasized.”
At the fourth Annual Pure Reality retreat: Broken and Restored, about over 400 young people met at Camp Kulaqua, located in High Springs, Florida from April 18-20, to hear speakers like Dr. Eric Walsh, medical director of East Campus Urgent Care at Loma Linda University. According to the Pure Reality website, one teen at this camp said: Being at Pure Reality has turned my views and expectations and has convinced me to change the non-Christian lifestyle that I was living. Having the knowledge has completely made me turn my life to Jesus Christ.

The nation's campaign to get more teenagers to delay sex and to use condoms is faltering, threatening to undermine the highly successful effort to reduce teen pregnancy and protect young people from sexually transmitted diseases, federal officials reported yesterday.

New data from a large government survey (YRBSS: Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System 2007) show that by every measure, a decade-long decline in sexual activity among high school students leveled off between 2001 and 2007, and that the rise in condom use by teens flattened out in 2003.

Moreover, the survey found disturbing hints that teen sexual activity may have begun creeping up and that condom use among high school students might be edging downward, though those trend lines have not yet reached a point where statisticians can be sure, officials said.

"The bottom line is: In all these areas, we don't seem to be making the progress we were making before," said Howell Wechsler, acting director of the division of adolescent and school health at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which conducts the survey. "It's very troubling."

Coming on the heels of reports that one in four teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease and that the teen birth rate has increased for the first time in 15 years, the data are triggering alarm across the ideological spectrum.

"We have a number of signs that are all going exactly in the wrong direction," said Sarah S. Brown, chief executive of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "All of us in this field are on red alert."

The new report did not examine the reason for the trends, but experts said there could be many causes, including rising complacency about HIV and AIDS, changing attitudes about sex and pregnancy, shifts in ethnic diversity, and the possibility that there will always be teens who cannot be persuaded to wait.

"The truth is that, as a field, we really don't know what the answer is," Brown said. "There are lots of theories: the economy, classroom education, the messages kids are getting in the digital world where they spend their time. They probably all play a role."

The new figures renewed the heated debate about sex-education classes that focus on abstinence until marriage, which began receiving federal funding during the period covered by the latest survey and have come under increasing criticism that they are ineffective.

"Since we've started pushing abstinence, we have seen no change in the numbers on sexual activity," said John Santelli, chairman of the department of population and family health at Columbia University. "The other piece of it is: Abstinence education spends a good amount of time bashing condoms. So it's not surprising, if that's the message young people are getting, that we're seeing condom use start to decrease."

Proponents of abstinence programs dismissed the criticism, blaming "comprehensive" sex education that emphasizes contraceptive use.

"Contraceptive sex education does not provide practical skills for maintaining or regaining abstinence but typically gives teens a green light to activity that puts them at great risk for acquiring STDs or which serve as gateway-to-intercourse activities," said Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association.

Others blamed the onslaught of movies, books, advertising and cultural messages that they say glamorize sex.

"The No. 1 movie that all teenage girls want to see right now is 'Sex and the City,' " said Charmaine Yoest, a spokesman for the Family Research Council. "Our culture continues to tell them the way to be cool is to dress provocatively and to consider nonmarital sexual activity to be normative."

The proportion of teenagers reporting having sexual intercourse rose steadily through the 1970s and 1980s, fueling a sharp rise in teen pregnancy. The trend reversed around 1991 because of AIDS, changing mores about sex and other factors. At the same time, more sexually active teens started using condoms and other contraceptive measures. Together, the trends have pushed the U.S. teen pregnancy rate to historic lows.

The first sign that trend might be reversing came last summer, when the CDC conducted an analysis for The Washington Post of data collected in 2005 by the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a nationally representative survey the CDC conducts every two years to track risky behaviors. While the rates still remained far below the all-time highs, the analysis showed that the proportion of teens who said they had ever had sex or had had sex in the last three months had leveled off, beginning in 2001. Researchers, however, were waiting for the next round of data to see whether a real trend was represented.

The new data come from the 2007 survey, which involved 14,103 students in grades nine through 12 at 157 high schools nationwide. The survey found a slight increase between 2005 and 2007 of the proportion who reported they had ever had sex, had begun having sex before age 13, had engaged in sex within the last three months and had had sex with at least four partners.

None of the increases was sufficient to convince statisticians that there is an upward trend. But when the agency analyzed the numbers for The Post, statisticians found that every measure of sexual activity passed the statistical test for having leveled off between 2001 and 2007, and the condom use numbers passed the test for leveling off beginning in 2003.

Because the survey involved only teens who are still in school, it might underestimate the level of sexual activity and overestimate condom use, several experts said.

"What's really important here is we're really running out of steam," Wechsler said. "There's no reason for panic, but there is reason for concern." ..News Source..

The trend in some homo circles is to disdainfully trumpet the death of Church and Wellesley. I wouldnt be caught dead in the Village, can be heard ad nauseum from most line ups at most Queer West venues. But a part of me wonders if the death of the Gay Village really matters?

To betray an earlier thought, it seems as if a physical Village is still an important place for any community, especially a minority group. A village begets social services (for the gays: the 519, ACT, et al) and more importantly a village stands as a physical beacon, the face of a community. For better or for worse, the Gay Village in Toronto has acted like any other ghetto in North America its given us a sense of permanency to our people; a home when no one else would let us be queer and fabulous.

But having accepted that - were left with my and others rather disdainful view of the current status of our Queer Village. While the popular argument has become that the gays, and I include myself, dont need the Village anymore, perhaps we shouldnt throw out the adopted Malawian baby with the bathwater. Without a physical beacon of rainbow coloured flags - do we, as a community, risk losing our place in the sun?

Every fall - theres talk in the States about how gays are becoming less and less visible as characters on scripted American TV shows. GLAAD statistics often become an opportunity for the community to rally around continued unacceptance in middle America of the homosexual lifestyle. While this may be the case - what if its also, in some way tied, to the death of the Village? As the traditional Village motif dies and becomes no longer relevant for the majority of the gay community - then what becomes our defining image? How can we sell ourselves if we ourselves dont even believe or practice what were selling? Unless the gay community can redefine its Village and offer up something that isnt stuck in 1999, and can be seen on reruns on Showcase, we may continue to lose the ever present PR war.

So lets call a spade a spade - gays - as is were no longer cool. And boys - its time for a re-brand.

Why not take a page from popular American retailer J.Crew, which successfully re-branded itself as your go-to shop for preppy yet stylish apparel. What about a GayCrew catalogue? Think realms of gay men in nice, tailored, age and size apPREPriate clothes? At the back of the J. Crew catalogue theres usually a wedding spread - why not a gay wedding spread? Gays already own most of Provincetown, what about a nice civil union in khakis, tailored blazers and monogrammed polos, at Hyannis or Marthas Vineyard?

Why stop there? What about coordinating matching madras shorts and dildos? See in the twenty first century gays can still be saucy, sassy and sexual, only now with a little bit more class and coordination.

So how do we go about achieving this much needed re-brand?

Generally a re-brand requires visionary leadership, an authoritarian
figure with enough chutzpah to take a broken vision and realign it with the contemporary mood. Will some manicured nails be broken along the way? Perhaps. Will there be an effigy of Abercrombie apparel at the corner of Church of Wellesley. Most definitely. But, the future, our future, is not built through niceties. Tough times require harsh measures. What the gays need is a gay dictator, who will set us, if not just a little bit more straight, a little bit Gay Crew.

Kress, Texas (The Weekly Vice) -- Erica Morquecho Gonzales, a 33 year old teachers aide at Kress High School in Kress, Texas has been indicted by a Hale County Grand Jury on a charge of improper relationship between educator and student.
