While many other designers were giving a blast from the past with their retro-inspired shows, Stefano Pilati at Yves Saint Laurent went the opposite direction and straight into the future. Black bowl-cut wigs, blacked out eyes and black makeup gave a futuristic, slightly gothic feel to the styling. It definitely wasn’t inappropriate; the cuts were nothing short of dramatic, giving great emphasis on cut, just as Pilati wanted.
 
You’re likely to notice a couple of pieces here and there that display the inescapable new fashion trend of retro. Most of it, however, has very sharp cuts and severe lines to the extent that a lot of the clothes look molded instead of simply fitted. Looseness and flow were provided by the 80’s banana-cut pants and the heavy-fabric skirts – rather a stark contrast to the fitted tops.
 
Color-wise, YSL is on the same fashion trend as Chanel and a good number of other fashion houses. Grays, beiges and blacks dominated the color palette on the runway, emphasizing the severe and austere look of the collection. There were some touches of color like a shiny gold one-piece dress or a baby blue jacket with some sheen, but these were few and far in between.
 
Geometry was obviously a major element in Pilati’s collection for Fall 2008. Geometric silhouettes and severe, almost straight cuts would serve as a concise description for the collection. Not everyone will find it sexy, but the restraint and the execution certainly made for very chic pieces. Perhaps, for just this season, you might want to switch to Pilati’s aesthetic of making a bold statement instead of just looking pretty.

Starting an online magazine at the age of 15 and spending at least 75% of my day behind my 17-inch mac book proone can only see how much my life revolves around the Internet.  With the holiday season coming around, I thought I would start looking for gift ideas for my young nieces and nephews. I didnt want to follow the most obvious route of videos games and barbie dolls.  Instead, I went online and came across a site called My Handwork Studio.  My Handwork Stduio is a new, safe virtual needle arts and fashion community where kids can be creative, learn new crafts and share their designs with new friends.

Skip the modeling social sites, you will only get perverts and scum bags and guys with camera, (GWC's) to hit and click upon you and whoo you with compliments, instead skip the ego boost and focus on photos. Even getting snap shots of your self and mailing them to modeling agencies is a step in the right direction.

2. Know what types of modeling are out there. It isn't just fashion. It isnt just Vogue and Playboy either. Think hair modeling, jewelry, fitness, parts models, leg modeling, swimwear, beauty, accessory brands need models, even pregnant models are needed for pregnant magazines. Of course your photos need to represent the type of modeling you want to do and can do. Be realistic with yourself, dont lie to yourself, be honest about the modeling jobs you can do and accept it. And work hard to get modeling work that is best for what you can offer the industry, even if it is just your hand for hand modeling. Look in magazines and focus on commercials and ad campaigns to get inspired to notice where models of all heights are needed and their pose, and the style of the shot. You need to make your photos look like ads and editorials to show you can model, and you do know how to work with products and pose. Practice makes perfect, just grab your favorite handbag and practice in front of your mirror. The best poses for commercial print modeling look natural, and not posed at all.

3..How to find the photographer. Well the word photographer has been put to shame by so many guys with camera so Google photography + your city, photography studio + your city, and make sure the photographer is a full time photographer, knowing photography skills, and has a respectable resume. Ask for a test shoot through email or call and ask if the photographer tests. Also photo school's, try SVA in NYC or F.I.T you might be able to find some aspiring photographers and designers who want to work with ambitious models. They will be more likely to know how to hold a camera than some scumbag who is paying you $100 to come over and bend over the couch during a so-called photo session. Skip embarrassing the family and focus on working with quality photographers, real photographers. Even stopping by a photo lab might be a good idea and asking if they can refer you to a good photographer.

4. Next Google modeling agencies, commercial print modeling agencies and agencies that deal with "parts" models. A shoe model can make over $1000 a day. Of course you need a decent editorial like photo of your feet, think Marie Claire editorials.

5. Make your own marketing tools. You need a composite card and headshot. You need to be prepared to make these marketing items yourself. For your comp card take your best 4-5 photos including a headshot, energy shot, and shots that show your diversity and your range in your look, and have them printed at a modeling comp card printing company. You can google to find a compcard printing company. Try: Printing comp cards + your city, modeling comp card printing + your city.

Abu Dhabi is only around 90 miles from its sleeker, chicer counterpart, Dubai, a giant construction pit of a city: Around one-third of the world's cranes are at work here, some on the Burj Dubai, potentially the world's tallest building when it's completed 2009. (Its projected finished height is secret.) I see no Priuses on the jammed, malevolent roads surrounding the city—notably the Sheikh Zayed, which rather magnificently bisects a valley of hotels and unfinished skyscrapers—but then, with gas around $2 a gallon, there seems to be little need for them. Air-conditioned bus shelters belie a desperate need for public transport: Armies of immigrant labor, largely from Pakistan and India, cram on to buses leading either toward or away from 24-hour construction sites.
Dubai is what happens when virtually unlimited wealth meets relentless marketing: Every new housing development or improbably green golf course is poised to become a stunning landmark on the skyline of Dubai (the Trump International Hotel Tower) or offers a delightful combination of three developments: Maple, Magnolia and Mulberry. If American developers have historically invoked the natural features their property has just destroyed (Pretty Oaks Mall, etc.), their UAE counterparts invoke those same features—flora and fauna more familiar to a Vermonter than an Emirati national. Of course, the expat population in Dubai is 80% of the whole—so perhaps maples and magnolias are just as appropriate as dwarf mangroves and acacia trees.
The marketing hyperbole extends to Dubai's malls: the Mall of the Emirates, the world's first shopping resort, is the biggest in the Middle East, satisfying undiscriminating expats with not just a Borders and (two) McDonald's—which advertises itself as the taste of home in Dubai—but a roller coaster, a dancing waters fountain complete with fire feature, a five-star Kempinski hotel, and an actual skiing facility, Ski Dubai, with five slopes and the world’s first indoor black run. What looks massive from Sheikh Zayed Road—a tilted gray slab lifted into the air by two square pillars—is more puzzling within, a showier, snowier riff on the incongruous patches of scrabbly green grass that line the access roads surrounding the airport: the effect is more We did it than We did it in a particularly nice and inviting way. Regardless, the slopes are packed each of the three times I visit the mall over a few hot June afternoons: on the first, a class of children in the complex's matching blue-and-red snowsuits mill between life-size statues in a training area, while tourists take their pictures through the heavily insulated windows.
The Mall of the Emirates is the first I've visited that includes a code of conduct on its directory hand-out: prescriptions against revealing knees and shoulders as well as overt displays of affection. (The accompanying graphic shows a man-shape and a woman-shape holding hands, and a red slash through them.) The crowd is more international than its counterpart at the Abu Dhabi Mall, meaning that for every abaya there is a pair of capri jeans, which seem to honor the letter if not the spirit of the provision. The atmosphere here is more spend-y as well: the ground level in Abu Dhabi housed the Abu Dhabi Co-op Hypermarket, selling groceries and TVs, like an oddly down-market Walmart; there is a sizable Carrefour here, but the vibe is more accurately conveyed by Via Rodeo, the small, high-end wing featuring Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce and Gabbana, YSL—and curiously no Fendi, which seems to be the handbag of choice amongst the women wearing the most elaborate abayas. (I count four in the sprawling accessories department at Harvey Nichols, where the chief attraction seems to be a wall of gorgeous Celine patent leather bags.

Well, its a fair while since my previous post about a knitting project. That hat went off to my friend in America: it was cheerful and suited her nature. Another one made it over to Ireland as a birthday gift. And after those two successes I thought I should try something challenging and for myself (so it wont matter so much if it turns out or not). 
This pattern looks hard but theres only one real tricky bit to it and once you get use to that, its almost easy. In my book its called , but I think is a far better description as the wool comes out in a worm like undulating and ridged fashion. I made a mistake about a third of the way through when I made a extra wide, but just decided I liked that better and from then on I varied the closeness of the wiggles.
Ive included a ball of lighter purple wool to show you, because I think Ill try to make an 1960s cap from a pattern I bought ages ago but never thought I could master. Ive tried it once and it ended up a bit holey, but I think if I try it again itll work this time.
