In 2004 Ishaa Koppikar's films were releasing on average every two months. Farhan Akhtar directed a 2006 remake of the Amitabh Bachchan hit Don: The Chase Begins Again, this time with Shahrukh Khan in the lead. Koppikar was cast as Khan's moll Anita. By now the success of Don was in contrast to Koppikar's stuttering career with a string of films stuck in production or abandoned. Vicky Ranawat's Haseena Smart Sexy and Dangerous crept out towards the end of 2006, Jagdish A Sharma's murder mystery Garhee appeared on dvd, Hansel Mehta's Raakh was dropped, whilst Koppikar's highest profile film of 2007, Nikhil Advani's multi starrer Salaam-e-Ishq, saw her sharing limited screen time with Sohail Khan. Ram Gopal Varma's much discussed Shabri, directed by Lalit Marathe -a role which led to Koppikar being unrecognised in character and barred from the film set by secuirty men- has yet to attract a distributor. To date only Ram Gopal Varma's Darling, with Fardeen Khan and Esha Deol has seen Koppikar continue any kind of momentum. Atul Agnihotri's Hello, based on the novel One Night in a Call Centre by Chetan Bhagat, has a 2008 release date and may be the first of several new movies which include Jahnu Barua's Har Phall, Manoj Tiwari's Hello Darling, Right Ya Wrong by Neeraj Pathak and Kaushik Ghatak's Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi.

is almost as expansive as the West itself, chronicling a pioneering family's triumphs and tragedies in numerous episodes spanning three generations and a half century of westward movement. Divided into five segments directed by veteran Hollywood filmmakers Henry Hathaway, George Marshall, and the legendary John Ford (and including uncredited sequences directed by Richard Thorpe), the film was one of the most ambitious ever made by the venerable MGM studio. Its stellar cast reads like a virtual who's who of Hollywood's biggest stars. Debbie Reynolds plays a sturdy survivor of many pioneering dangers, and the eventual widow of a gambler (Gregory Peck), who is later reunited with her nephew (George Peppard), a Civil War veteran and cavalryman who heads for San Francisco as the transcontinental railroad is being built. Many more characters and stories are woven throughout this epic film, which is dramatically uneven but totally engrossing with its stunning vistas and countless outdoor locations in Illinois, Kentucky, South Dakota, Monument Valley in Arizona, California, Colorado, and elsewhere.

The three discs in this boxed set cover quite a bit of territory. Volume 1 does a great job on UFOs, especially on Roswell and alien-human hybrids, but falls woefully short in the ghost-stories segment. Volume 2 thoroughly explores vampires and Nostradamus, although the style is somewhat dry. And Volume 3 purports to be about miracles and mysteries, though it shortchanges us in both categories, especially in the mystery department in which they present only one kinda crappy mystery about Whitley Strieber. Also, this one mysteriously ends 30 minutes too soon. The sound and visual quality of the first and third discs is uniformly bad. And the second one is just fine in both areas, for some reason. In many ways, this set is a grab bag of supernatural explorations rather than a consistently produced product. Theyve mixed and matched from several sources to put this together, with predictable results. Some terrific stuff, and some duds. The UFO and vampires pieces are particularly engrossing.

Costing between 4 and 6 million dollars, Ben-Hur is the most expensive silent film ever made. This silent film directed by Fred Niblo was a blockbuster hit for newly merged Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This was the second film based on the novel Ben-Hur by Lew Wallace.

Ben-Hur is a wealthy Jew and boyhood friend of the powerful Roman Centurion, Messala. When an accident leads to Ben-Hur's arrest, Messala, who has become corrupt and arrogant, makes sure Ben-Hur and his family are jailed and separated.

Ben-Hur is sent to work in the galley of a Roman warship. Along the way he unknowingly encounters Christ, the carpenter's son who offers him water. Once aboard ship, his attitude of defiance and strength impresses a Roman admiral, Quintus Arrius, who allows him to remain unchained. This actually works in the Admiral's favor because when his ship is attacked and sunk by pirates, Ben-Hur saves him from drowning.

Arrius then treats Ben-Hur as a son and over the years, the young man grows strong and becomes a victorious chariot racer. This eventually leads to a climactic showdown with Messala in a chariot race, in which Ben-Hur is the victor.

Ben-Hur is eventually reunited with his mother and sister, who are suffering from leprosy but are miraculously cured by Christ.

Shooting began in Italy in 1923, starting two years of difficulties, accidents, and eventually a move back to Hollywood. Additional recastings (including Ramon Novarro as Ben-Hur) and a change of director helped skyrocket the production's budget. Although audiences flocked to Ben-Hur after its premiere in 1925 and the picture grossed nine million dollars, its huge expenses and the deal with Erlanger made it a loser for MGM. MGM was unable to regain its $4,000,000 investment.

When filming the chariot scene, the drivers were careful and slow, which disappointed Meyer. To make it more exciting, he offered a prize of $100 (about $1000+ today) to the winner, and the resulting heated competition led to the horrendous crash that remains in the movie. That and another fatal accident lead to changes in rules of filming and film safety.

A total of 60,960 m (200,000 ft) of film was shot for the chariot race scene which was eventually edited down to 229 m (750 ft). This scene has been much imitated. It was re-created virtually shot for shot in the 1959 remake, and more recently imitated in the pod race scene in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace which was made almost 75 years later. Some scenes in the film were in two-strip Technicolor. One of the assistant directors for this sequence was a very young William Wyler, who would direct the 1959 remake.
And now I wonder: "Why is this a picture every Christian ought to see".
