Glam Glam Glam. Here are the best dressed at the premiere! We are particularly impressed with the variety in colors and shapes. Sonam and Sophie, ever the fashion rebels totally nailed it. Were lovin Farahs magenta number with ruffles. The Bachchans need to teach a thing or two about dressing up to their son and daughter-in-law! Twinkle spelled understated glam and were loving the over-sized clutch, what a great way to accessorize. The Khans family came out in their evening attire and how cute is little Ms.Khan, were gonna be looking out for this one! While Sonali and Kirron both opted for shades of pink, we love how glam both of them look.

Fashion is the biggest project for Madhur Bhandarkar. Majority of his films have been low budget affairs (no, we are not counting Aan - Men At Work), whether it is Trishakti, Chandni Bar, Satta or Traffic Signal. Page 3 and Corporate saw the bar being raised when it came to money being spent on projects but Fashion jumps all bars when it comes to budget being set for a Bhandarkar film. The film has been mounted on a lavish scale, boasts of top-line actors (Priyanka Chopra, Kangana) and even sees Salim-Sulaiman coming on board as composers (with Irfan Siddiqui as the lyricist) while replacing Shamir Tandon with whom Bhandarkar has worked in quite a few projects. This is the first step in the right direction for the director since the composer duo come up with the tunes that dont just go by the theme of the film; they also have a couple of numbers in the offering which have a chartbuster appeal to them.

Ten seconds into the title song Fashion Ka Jalwa and you would find your feet tapping to the songs beats. Interestingly arranged and orchestrated, the song (which has Sandeep Nath as the guest lyricist) has as its punch word with Satya Hinduja and Robert Omulo giving Sukhwinder Singh company behind the mike. Though the songs base remains to be entirely Western, it is by Sukhwinder Singh which gets an Indian feel to the proceedings. Lasting close to five minutes and also appearing in a remix version, this is not a number, which you find humming around the town but would enjoy it being played on screen at a strategic point of the narrative.

Soon after comes the best song of the album, Mar Jaava. A true blue lounge number, which requires only one listening to be declared as one of the best tracks, heard so far in 2008, it is made special by Shruti Pathak who comes up with an amazing rendition. Its her husky, low-key voice, which spins magic in this Salim-Sulaiman composition that flows smoothly at a leisurely pace and has in it to be put on a repeat mode and played on for hours at stretch. Moreover, Salim Merchants back-up vocals add on to the lounge appeal of this love song, which should be a highlight of the film. The number later arrives in a remix version as well and though club hoppers wont mind it blazing hard, for the ones who are looking at a quite outing with themselves, the original composition is always a better bet.
It is time to enter composer Pritams territory with the emergence of . A soft rock track that has Salim Merchant going ahead with a solo rendition, is a love song which follows the same path as Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai [Gangster] and [Hijack], both of which have proved to be popular with the music lovers. DJ Amyth created remix version is just an added bonus as it heads straight for a night club, hence adding on to the glam theme of Fashion. The song, which would have been milked to the hilt had it landed with the Bhatts, makes it three-in-a-row for Fashion.
Coming together of Mohit Chauhan and Neha Bhasin ensures that a song would have a contemporary setting to it and that exactly is the case for Kuchh Khaas as well. In any other film belonging to romance genre, this one would have been grabbed by both hands by the makers though one wonders that how long it would last on screen in Fashion. Ok, so the number isnt an exceptional hearing but if you have liked the haunting sound of Vishal-Shekhars Khuda Jaane [Bachna Ae Haseeno], it wont be surprising if you end up putting Kuchh Khaas on a repeat mode as well. The remix version only keeps the contemporary urban mood of the film on and gives a different account of Madhur Bhandarkar who has more or less stayed away from conventional peppy love songs in his earlier projects.
The album continues to impress till the very end with the sound of at the start of turning out to be such an enticing piece that it is hard to ignore it after the very first listening. A club sound begins soon after to keep the pace on for this theme track, which should be playing when the models are walking the ramp and some of the dramatic points in the narrative. However, it is the sound of followed by the same piece being played on violin, which gives this theme track a grand feel.
A winner all the way, it also appears in a six-minute version. However, Karsh Kale and Medeival Punditz, the men behind the remix, dont just add on a few touch-ups here and there but actually twist and turn the composition to enhance the dramatic appeal. In fact, while the original composition still had some relief to it, the remix version takes a full-on approach and it is only after 80 seconds that the signature theme piece is heard again.
Fashion works in totality and while numbers like Fashion Ka Jalwa, and Kuchh Khaas are good in their own right, the cake is taken by the Fashion - Theme and Mar Jaava which are the pick of the lot. In his career so far, Madhur Bhandarkar films havent been known for their music, even though the albums of Corporate and Page 3 still saw some sales on the stands. However, Fashion is all set to break the jinx while turning out to be the first Madhur Bhandarkar film ever to boast of a truly mass as well as class appealing score.

fashion show and after party

My boss took me to my first fashion show in New York tonight. It was Gen Art's 14th Annual Fresh Faces in Fashion Runway Show and Party hosted by Shannon Doherty. The 13-year old girl inside of me was super excited. We had to take the M16 bus to the show because it was rush hour and there were no cabs around. The bus driver was very nice, and let us pay partial fare for one of us because we didn't have enough change. The fashion show was very exciting. We were on the VIP list and got balcony seats. Afterwards we took photos in front of the screen as if we were Paris Hilton.

I attended the after-party alone as my boss was too tired to come along. I went, took funny photos in the booth, found the VIP section by randomly following people, watched taggers spray paint a mural of the skyline, saw Shannon Doherty thisclose and then proceeded to win a Blackberry Curve with the help of a lucky charm.

On my way home, I discussed the merits and faults of living in New York City with the Pakistani taxi cab driver.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, who has taken over as the president of Pakistan, will not be a ceremonial head of state. The widower of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto will be armed with the powers to dissolve the National Assembly and to appoint Supreme Court and high court judges as well as the chiefs of staff, and will be the supreme commander of the armed forces.
As president, Zardari will also preside over the National Security Council and National Command Authority of nuclear weapons.

In the history of Pakistan, civilian presidents with such powers were Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Farooq Leghari. The former was elected with the army #39s support in 1988, while the latter was elected with Benazir Bhutto #39s support in 1993.

Khan dismissed Benazir Bhutto as prime minister in 1990 and dissolved the National Assembly. He dismissed prime minister Nawaz Sharif and dissolved the National Assembly in 1993, but the Supreme Court held the dismissal unconstitutional and restored Sharif to office. The resulting crisis was resolved by then army chief Abdul Waheed Kakkar who obtained the resignations of both Sharif and Khan and aloowed the holding of fresh elections.

Those elections returned Benazir Bhutto to power with a majority. She got Leghari, her then loyalist, elected as president. In the next three years they developed serious differences and Leghari dismissed Benazir Bhutto and dissolved the National Assembly in November 1996.

The new elections brought Sharif to power with a landslide majority. He used it to strip the president of powers to dissolve the National Assembly and dismiss the prime minister. With the army #39s tacit support, he compelled Leghari to resign. He vested in the prime minister all the powers that the 1973 constitution bestowed on the office of predient and made the post ceremonial.

However, Pervez Musharraf once again changed this and vested the powers of dismissing the prime minister and dissolving the National Assembly in the president. The two parties - the PPP and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had earlier agreed that this position would be reversed at the earliest and a constitutional amendment would be carried through, stripping the president of these powers. However, the amendment has not been enacted and therefore Zardari will have all the powers Musharraf had as president.

One wonders whether the PPP, under the present circumstances, will have any interest in enacting an amendment stripping the president of those powers and vesting them back in the prime minister.

In her latest pronouncements, Information Minister and PPP leader Sherry Rehman talked about a balanced distribution of powers between the president and the prime minister. Zardari, who is the co-chairman of the party, will be in a position to have the PPP prime minister to toe his line.

Zardari is not a popular person. He was known as Mr Ten Percent when his wife was the prime minister. There were many cases of corruption and money laundering against him and one case of alleged murder of his own brother-in-law Murtaza Bhutto. All these cases were withdrawn under Musharraf #39s National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).

It is feared that Chief Justice Iftikhar Choudary might set aside the NRO, which has compelled Zardari to oppose restoration of the chief justice. There are allegations in the Pakistani media that the NRO was part of the deal between Benazir Bhutto and Musharraf, which the US promoted.

Now, reports have emanated that Zardari has been in touch with Zalmay Khalilzad, the US Ambassador to UN, who was formerly ambassador to Afghanistan and Iraq and a specialist on Pakistan during the days he was in the National Security Council and the Rand Corporation. There is therefore a suspicion that Zardari #39s bid for presidency may have US support. There is also a widespread belief that after the departure of Musharraf, perhaps even before his departure, the US had concluded that General Ashfaq Kayani is the man they have to deal with and have arrived at a modus vivendi with him.

Therefore, one wonders whether Zardari too had an understanding with the Pakistani Army on the lines of the arrangement it had with Khan and Benazir Bhutto in 1988, a deal that was worked out under US mediation. According to that arrangement, national security matters that included the armed forces; nuclear weapons; the Inter Services Intelligence(ISI); policies towards India, Afghanistan, China and the US would be excluded from the purview of the civilian government and made the exclusive prerogative of the army.

During that time, a scheme of troika consisting of the president, the prime minister and the army chief worked. Though this is not being discussed so far in the Pakistani media, the issue of importance for India is whether Zardari, when vested with all extra powers, will be like Khan or Musharraf.

It is very unlikely that he would be like the latter since he is not the army chief, which Musharraf was. If he is like Khan, then Pakistan #39s policy in respect of Kashmir, India in general, Afghanistan, US, China and nuclear strategy including confidence building measures will be decided by the army chief, appropriately briefed by the ISI.

Zardari and Gilani together will be back to the era of first term of office of Benazir Bhutto. She had revealed extensively to the media how powerless she was in those days as prime minister. This time, not only the prime minister, but the president also will have to function within the lines drawn by the army chief.

Can Zardari assert his authority over the army? He has before him the example of Sharif who tried to dismiss an army chief and was in turn toppled. It is also likely that the US may prefer to deal with General Kayani as their primary interlocutor with a civilian facade provided by Zardari and Gilani. In other words, an asymmetric situation is likely to develop.

While Pakistanis will have access to Indian decision makers - the prime minister and foreign minister - the Indian side will not have access to the real decision makers of Pakistani foreign and security policy - the Pakistani army chief. Only one country in the world has that access - the US. So it is necessary for India to have close relations with the US defence establishment to get to know the Pakistani thinking on various issues.

Two questions have arisen of late. First relates to alleged fears expressed in the US about the mental stability of Zardari and consequent risks of his having his finger on Pakistani nuclear button. Zardari is reported to have produced certificates on his mental instability to secure bail, when he was in prison. Whatever may be the truth, the Pakistani nuclear button will be under the control of the army chief, though the formal position will be that the president is the ultimate authority.

Secondly, questions have been raised about Zardari pursuing his own policies. In Pakistan, the ISI, of which General Kayani was the erstwhile chief and of which he is now the overall boss as the army chief, collects all internal and external intelligence. Given Zardari #39s background, he is bound to be influenced by the intelligence collected about him and he will hardly be in a position to act against the wishes of the army.

There is an oft repeated joke in Pakistan. In Pakistani polity, either a general sits on the chair of power or stands behind it. We have moved from the era when the general was sitting on the chair to one where he is standing behind.

In line with most of the countries in South Asia, Pakistan has a type of politics that revolves around a few powerful families. These families have been ruling the only nuclear Islamic state for the last 60 years.

Except for a few cosmopolitan cities, most of the constituencies are inherited by prominent families since August 14, 1947, the day this South Asian Islamic state obtained its independence from the British rule. In 1985, former Pakistani finance minister Dr. Mahbub-ul-Haq revealed in a detailed study that Pakistan was being ruled by merely 22 big families since 1947.

These families enjoy more influence in Punjab (the most populous province and the power base of the country's politics), Sindh (the second largest province), and Balochistan, which borders Iran and Afghanistan.
However, the family-oriented politics has considerably eroded in the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), which touches the war-torn Afghanistan, with the incursion of politicians belonging to a middle-income bracket into politics, especially after 9/11. According to Dr. Mahbub-ul-Haq, these families consider their respective constituencies their states and never allow middle- or lower-middle-class politicians to emerge as a threat to their political domination.

...............................................................

A detailed study revealed that Pakistan has been ruled by merely 22 big families since 1947. Most of the constituencies are inherited by them.

...............................................................
Up to the 1980s, some of these families opposed opening schools and colleges in their respective constituencies, fearing the emergence of an educated class that might challenge their domination. This feudal influence is more evident in Pakistan's rural politics. These families control the hearts and minds of the local population through the huge lands they own.

Farmers and growers who work in their lands are not merely their employees but also their voters as well as their workers in the electoral campaigns. In return, the feudal families provide livelihood to these poor people in the form of wheat, rice, sugar, and other essential commodities on annual basis.
Although some of the famous feudal names were marginalized after the independence, the feudal dominance endured as these feudal individuals have been only replaced by other powerful families.

Ironically, all the major political and religious parties, with a couple of exceptions, are run on a family basis. After the death of the father or mother, there are no elections for the next party leader. This is true even in the religious parties. There is always a nomination. A son or a daughter is nominated as the party head after his or her father's or mother's death.
The glaring example of this trend is the nomination of Bilawal Zardari, the 19-year-old son of Pakistan's slain prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated on December 27, 2007, in the garrison city of Rawalpindi at a public meeting. The Bhuttos are just one of many other families that dominate the Pakistani political scene.

Bhutto Family, Sharif Family, Mian Family, Chaudhry family, Rashdi Family (Pir Sahib Pagara), Bhatti family, Syeds, Qureshi Family, Gillani Family, Awan or Malik Family, Khosa Family, Jatoi Family, Legharis.

Fashion has become global. Fashion weeks are not only held in Paris or Milan, but also in Bombay, Reykjavik or Amsterdam. It is fascinating to see trends being present around the world, but at the same time mixed with local elements.
Paris might still be the center of fashion, but in the designer top ten, no Frenchman can be found. Top designers are the Japanese Yohji Yamamoto, Turkish Hussein Chalayan, British Vivienne Westwood, African Xuly Bët and German Bernhard Wilhelm.
Bombay is currently Indias major fashion trend setting centre, whose fashion has influenced many youth all over the country. Bombay being the epitomb of Indian fashion,is where you will find the latest brands and fashion in most major malls, fashion outlets and retail clothng chains.
Bombay is a shopper’s paradise. The shops and bazaars offer a truly amazing diversity of goods, as well as being worth a visit in their own right. Bombay sells everything from expensive European antiques to local spices by way of electrical goods and silks. In particular, it is the center of the Indian fashion trade and caters for all tastes and budgets. Bombay is also home to a number of tailors who will make clothes quickly at a reasonable cost. For the more adventurous shopper, there is a large amount of Indian furniture for sale in Bombay, both at dealers and in the bazaars.
In Bombay however, when it comes to fashion, fashion street always come to ones mind. It is the most famous spot in bombay for mumbaikars as well as all people in maharashtra and tourists, who will come here to shop for clothings. Bargaining is the order of the day in bombay fashion street.

Michael Kors Desert Patent Large Satchel
My all time favorite handbag designer is Louis Vuitton but coming in at a close second is Michael Kors. I absolutely love Michael Kors handbags, espcially his Patent Leather bags. Every season Michael Kors comes out with new fashionable patent leather bags that make my heart go pitter patter. One of his new patent leather bags out this season is the Desert Patent Large Satchel. The satchel is actually quite roomy in person, and can definitely hold a lot. The bag is accented with a lovely drawstring, but also has a magnetic snap closure. The magnetic snap closure not only makes it easier for women to close the bag, but it reassures them of not having their bag reopening on its own.
The Desert Patent Large Satchel comes in two different colors: Black and Zebra. My personal favorite is the Black patent. It’s classic, gorgeous, and so big I could literally fit my whole dresser in this bag. The best part about the Desert Patent Large Satchel is that it comes with an affordable price tag of $398. For a big handbag at such an affordable price what patent leather lover wouldn’t want to snag this bag? I know this handbag will be on my wishlist.
