I started looking at the names of the photographers and one name stood out every time, Pavla Kopecna. I started looking at her body of work and was very impressed. Pavla has a lot of talent and her photos really set her apart from everyone around her. She was kind enough to do an interview for Strange Digs this week so enjoy!

10 Questions with Pavla Kopecna

1. How old were you when you moved to London and is that when you first developed a passion for photography?

I only moved to London four years ago, after I graduated. Before then I lived all over the world, and loved taking photos ever since my dad gave me a second-hand camera for my 7th birthday. But my passion for photography actually developed when I lived in America during my "gap year" (a year out before going to university) in 2001. I was always into taking "pretty pictures" and party snaps with an automatic or a Polaroid camera before and it was my American boyfriend at the time who showed me how to use a 35mm SLR, which let me have more fun with exposures, grain and so on.

2. You run an ongoing event called Twee as F**K (I'll block it out for our young readers). Are most of the bands that play that event already somewhat successful or does Twee as F**K open them up to a larger audience?

We'd love to think that we open up amazing but little known bands to a larger audience and sometimes I see evidence of it, which is great. For example at May's Twee as F**k we had a band from Sweden called A Smile And A Ribbon. We only heard them on MySpace before and they were very little known in the UK but we fell in love with them so invited them over and helped arrange other gigs for them in the UK so they could afford to come here. And a couple of days after the gig a girl I was working with was playing her iPod on the speakers and the first stuff she played was A Smile And A Ribbon! She had heard them for the first time at Twee as F**k and got their CD! That sort of stuff makes me really happy. Another amazing band we fell in love with is Je Suis Animal. They're from Norway and virtually unknown in the UK, so we're putting them on at White Heat on 5th of August, so hopefully more people will hear them. Having said that we don't purposefully go look out for small bands to introduce to wider audiences. We simply put on bands that we really really love and that involves a mix of big and small. For instance at the Twee as F**k All-dayer (Saturday 12 July at The Macbeth) we'll have indie legends Comet Gain, and couple of wonderful little bands like Little My (from Wales) and The Margarets (From Sweden), all of which we're really excited about.

3. As a photographer myself, I struggled a lot with making the switch from large format cameras to digital. When you remove the dark room, you remove much of the magic and spontaneity from photography. What is your format of choice and how do you compare film to digital?

I do think it's a struggle working with digital, because it just doesn't compare to the loveliness and otherworldliness of film. If I have the budget and/ or time, I always shoot on film, medium format (I use a 1982 Mamiya RZ) being my favourite. At the same time, I try not to be snobbish about it. Digital does have its advantages when it comes to convenience and I'm much more of an image-focused rather than format/ process focused photographer anyway - I love creating images out of nothing, including Polaroids, mobile phone snaps, video stills. And being of a certain generation I actually spend a lot more time on the computer than in the dark room. Even when I work with Polaroids or negatives, the bulk of my post-production is done in Photoshop. I also think that digital is in a way more of a challenge - a digital image is not inherently aesthetically pleasing, like a film image, so it takes more work to make it a great one. I do think the whole film/ digital debate is interesting though, and I wonder how it will read in fifty, hundred years time - whether people will become nostalgic about 1990s digital grain or whether professional photographers will give up on digital and focus on making film better. Probably not though!

5. You already have a pretty impressive list of magazines your works have been featured in like Spin, Arena, Nylon Vogue. Who was your first big client and how did that open doors for your career?

There are a number of clients who have been really helpful. My first "muse" was a wonderful singer called Paloma Faith. I first met her at a gig in London three years ago and started taking live photographs of her. She was a great subject, because she always created her own world with costumes and props. Each one of her gigs was unique. She was still very much underground then, but she's gone onto great things, having been signed by Epic Records and cast in the new Terry Gilliam film, so my images of her have always been in demand, and many potential clients approach me having seen my photographs of her. She's also a fantastic art director and was my first collaborator when it came to styled shoots. The other big breakthroughs for me were with Spin magazine in New York and Dummy magazine in London. I did an internship at Spin in 2007 and I've never worked with nicer or more helpful people. They really taught me about how photo departments in magazines operate, and every time I go back to New York I can't wait to come in to Spin. After i finished my internship there I applied for a job at Dummy Magazine in London. I had a look at a number of small independent music publications, and Dummy was by far the best written, best put together magazine, with the most wonderful photographs. I became a Photo Editor there, which has really opened doors for me. I began photographing a wide range of musicians and learnt a great deal about commissioning photographers and producing shoots as well.

6. I tried working for a newspaper once, but photojournalism was a nightmare! I am not the type of person that takes spur-of-the-moment shots. I need my photo shoots well thought out and organized, down to hair, make-up and backgrounds. I noticed you work a lot with solid color backdrops. How well planned are your shoots? Do you have a sketch book with ideas or just let the models do their own thing?

It really depends. Sometimes I'll have five minutes to take a portrait of a celebrity, other times I'll have months to plan and organize a fashion shoot. Sometimes I photograph performers who are amazing at styling and composing themselves, other times I'm asked to take a portrait of someone who hates having their picture taken and needs reassurance, direction and distraction. I do prefer well-thought out photo shoots, it's a joy to work on something in your head and then help realize it come to life. That's definitely a big part of why I've moved away from live music photography to press shots, editorial and fashion. Even though I used to be very anti-fashion, I have to confess I really love working on fashion shoots. It can be a real pleasure to work with a team where you all understand each other and work towards the same goal, and great professional models are a dream to photograph because they can both pose yet remain malleable to direction. And yes, I do have a sketchbook with ideas and clippings, but most of those have yet to be realized.

7. I've interviewed a few of your friends, Amy from Theoretical Girl and Samantha from Ipso Facto (both are sweethearts). You're surrounded by musicians, photograph musicians and organize musical events. How are you not in a band or are you?

Yes, they are both sweethearts and very talented. Alas, I'm afraid I'm one of those poor folk who love music but are completely tone-deaf and devoid of rhythm so I could never be in a band! I DJ a lot though, and I really love that. There are definitely parallels with photography - seeing/ feeling what works together, creating an atmosphere....And I think the aesthetics and styles associated with different music genres and bands are really important. Although these things often get dismissed as a "scene", I think they are instrumental because we need both visual and aural expressions of whatever idea or ethos lies underneath these expressions. For example, my love of indiepop extends from the music to the pretty and simple fashion aesthetic to the do-it-yourself-from-scratch fanzine and record label ethos.

8. I've got a few artist friends that attend Goldsmiths. Are there a lot of creative people to work with there or not really?

Goldsmiths is a vibrant hot bed of creativity. Not only that, it is clever creativity, not mindless, empty creativity for the sake of it associated with places like Shoreditch. I've met many people from there who are doing wonderful things with music and the arts. Sam, from Ipso Facto springs to mind as do SKIPtheatre - three Goldsmiths Graduates who are taking London by storm by bringing theatre performances to younger audiences in music and club venues.

9. We both majored in History but work as photographers, how strange. Did you have big plans to become a History professor or was it just something to major in?

I did want to be a history professor once when I was little. But the big plan was always to study history first, then the present (so I went on to study digital media and image making, which seems a big part of our society) and then the future/ bigger picture (I have a sneaky suspicion I'll go on to study psychology). I haven't met many historians cum photographers, but apparently the psychology/ photography mix is very common....

10. Who was your first celebrity crush and how has that influenced your life?

Hmmm.....that must have been Leon Trotsky. For as long as I can remember I was attracted to him, probably because he was always compared to Stalin in history books and was his more bookish, sane antidote. Plus he was an underdog, had black curly hair, and came to an unfair, bitter end. I'm not sure how this has influenced me. This was when I was about 12 or 13, after I just moved to England and was definitely a loner, not speaking much English and being out of school for a year, so it's probably helped me identify with folk on the outside. Around the same time, I also developed a crush on Jarvis Cocker and Quentin Tarantino. I'm a bit of a sucker for tall, skinny, gangly, boyish and geeky men who do their own thing.

According to his account, he was trying to explain to the bodyguard that he wanted to meet Eminem when the rapper turned around and punched him.
Hes claiming the classic lawsuit issues due to the incident; that hes undergone physical pain and suffering, emotional distress, has dealt with ongoing serious injuries requiring medical treatment and suffered embarrassment, humiliation, the burden of medical expenses, wage loss and other economic and non-economic damages. So pretty much that one punch ruined his whole life.
