You should consider this school if you're looking for a place with: a very well rounded approach to school core curriculum of the three Rs and equal emphasis on extracurricular activities (sports via CYO, student council, yearbook, community service, etc); an active (and I mean active) parent community, and a very traditional school setting and culture (think Leave It to Beaver), engaged teachers who seem devoted to their craft, a foundation of Catholicism in the sense of a respect for God and appreciation for spirituality, a structured and clearly well-run administration, and a real sense of community between the different grades.

The Facts
Web site: www.stmonicasf.org
School tours: by appointment
Location: 5920 Geary Blvd, Richmond district
Grades: K-8
Start time: 8:00 a.m.
Kindergarten size: 16 students (by my count but I am told that average class size is 25)
Average class size lower school, K8: 20-25, one class per grade
Total student body: 225 students
Tuition: (based on one child)
$5,320 for Catholic in Parish
$5,570 for Catholic out of Parish
$6,010 for Non-Catholic
Financial aid: Financial Aid assistance is awarded on the basis of need and funded through the BASIC Fund for low-income families.
Before- and after-school program: Extend Care program $2,394/year, drop-in fees $6.00/hour. School-run with multiple activities, including dance, music, and physical activities. There are also numerous additional enrichment programs for additional cost. In addition, starting in 3rd grade (I think) there is a variety of sports teams offered and school extracurricular activities (at no cost).
Language: There is a Mandarin Chinese class offered after school for additional cost. I did not note if additional language class offered starting in middle school.
Highlights: There is a wide range of extracurricular activities after school including Mandarin language, Science Adventure Club, guitar and piano lessons, dance, etc. for additional cost. In addition, mostly for older children, the school offers a host of school-sponsored activities including student council, media club, yearbook, newspaper, peer tutoring etc. Also there is a range of sports options starting in 3rd grade soccer (I think), basketball and baseball (co-ed) for boys and soccer, volleyball and baseball (co-ed) for girls. All at no cost.

In addition, because of the schools Catholic foundation, community service is also integrated beginning in 8th grade with visits to St. Anthonys kitchen, volunteering in the Parish, etc.

Thanhs impressions
St. Monica is a very traditional school in the very best sense but will never be mistaken for alternative school. My takeaway is that their mission is to develop the whole child academically and developmentally. As such, there seems to be equal emphasis on core academics and extracurricular activities. Academically the school wants to ensure that their middle schools students are prepared for high school. Were told that most students seem to enroll in St. Ignatius, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Archbishop Riordan, Mercy and Lowell and from the parents who led the tour, that seemed to bear out. As you can see from the highlights, there is what seems like a few hundred ways to get involved in the school via extracurricular activities.

Our tour started in the Library (with a dedicated librarian) and two current St. Monica parents met us. The Principal, Mr. Sweeters, who has been there 3 years, led the intro session. We met Mr. Mullen who is the 8th grade science teacher and two 8th grade students who were part of the Student Council. Mr. Mullen was clearly excited about his craft, he leads a 7th vs. 8th grade science challenge every year, and is proud of the fact that St. Monica kids are ready for a college preparatory high school when they leave. Example cited: you take Algebra in 8th grade and when you enter 9th grade, you are ready to Algebra II or Honors Algebra. One statement he made stuck out for me. St. Monica offers a range of tutoring both by peers and by teachers outside of class. The philosophy is that instead of lowering academic standards and expectations, they want to build a of support with regard to academics, should youre child need it.

Curriculum
The curriculum is based on California standards, in addition to adherence to curriculum guidance from the Catholic Archdiocese (I think). K-6 is homeroom style, with one teacher teaching all subjects, and augmentation from specialty teachers for art, music, computers. Starting in 7th grade, you start having multiple teachers across different subjects, so a history teacher, a math teacher, a science teacher, and english teacher, etc. Homework starts in kindergarten, and is about 15 minutes, for both K and 1st grade. Then each subsequent year adds an additional 15 minutes so if youre doing your math, it ends up being about 1.5 to 2 hours by 8th grade. I am told that the K homework might be something like read your child a book and have him or her tell you about what happened. I dont know the extent and how it works in practice, but apparently the teachers (who are mostly long-term), are required to take additional professional development courses.

Tour and Day in the Life
We then moved on to look at the kindergarten class. It was incredibly cheerful room with all sorts of kid drawings and activities on the wall. There were 3 computers in the class. They had just finished english and were involved in free form play most of the girls were playing dress-up in a great dress up corner and playhouse, and most of the boys were building giant forts with wooden blocks. From what I could see of the english workbooks on their desk, it looked like what they had been doing was coloring with crayons all pictures of things that started with D, so coloring in a dog and not coloring in phone. I have to say I liked what I saw of both things in that there was both structured learning and unstructured activity. Unfortunately, did not meet the K primary teacher because she was out sick. Met the assistant teacher and a parent who was helping out. Apparently parental help is welcome, and up to the teachers to determine the level.

We saw a 1st grade PE class in a nice little gym, led by their PE teacher who seemed enthused and liked the kids. All the kids were lined up and learning how to kick a soccer ball with the inside of their foot and passing it back and forth to each other. The K-3 play yard did not have a playground structure apparently the teachers bring out balls, hula-hoops, equipment, etc. to play with. There are two daily recesses, each 30 minutes. And an Activity Time, for 30 minutes activity time might include yoga, PE, etc. depending on the day. The school day at St. Monica is long, 8:00am to 2:50pm, so there is a 30-minute Rest Time after lunch for Kindergarteners, where you can either do quiet activities or even nap. We saw a 2nd grade class in the computer lab (with new iMacs) doing games that helped them with math and keyboarding, led by a computer teacher, with the second-grade teacher present and lending support. We saw the middle school science class and observed a 4th grade class I cant remember the subject and the only thing from my notes that is interesting at all, is the fact that there was same level of cheerfulness with walls plastered with student work.

Student Observation and Diversity
St. Monica is a mostly Asian student body 40% are Chinese, 24% are Caucasian, and 22% are bi-racial (mostly Asian/Caucasian), 14% other. I could be wrong, but I dont remember seeing any African-Americans. My observations of the kids are that these are real kids not worldly nor overly coddled, just happy, well-adjusted children. The two 8th graders we met were confident, bright, articulate boys who seemed respectful to each other and respectful to their teachers. Just a nice note: the school has a K and 8th grade program, which work on projects together once a week, and it was delightful to hear how much those boys liked working with their K buddies. That was reinforced by the K teacher who remarked on how much the Ks adored their 8th grade buddies.

Parental Involvement
You are expected to provide 25 hours of service per family/year. You are also expected to participated in Fall Fundraiser by selling $300 worth of products (youre able to buy our $200 yourself), participate in Spring Fundraiser by purchasing $100 with items in something (auction?), and $250 in Maintenance Fund, an emergency fund to cover capital improvements. In addition to that, it sounds like, just as there seem to be a lot of extracurricular activities for your kids, there are many ways you can jump into and help as a parent parent club, room parent group, parent volunteer on business side (marketing and development). The parents we met were long-term parents who were relaxed, clearly very involved in the school and in their kids, and really proud of their children.

Personal Note
So I have to address the Catholicism, a bit, I think. St. Monica is Catholic school make no mistake about it - which means in Kindergarten, you have 20 minutes of religion class, school assembly every morning starts with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, and there is once-a-month student Mass. Catholic students will be prepared to have First Communion and Confirmation. There are students who are non-Catholic (as a matter of fact, my notes tell me that 50% of students are non-Catholic, could that be right?), and they seemed genuinely open to accepting students who are non-Catholic. Personal note, I am Catholic (and handful of Mass/year attendee who was raised by a Buddhist father, who promised my mother when she died that he would raise me Catholic), my husband is not, and our son is not baptized. For some folks, Catholicism, however offered, is not going to be suitable. For others, it might be a draw. For our family, here is how we look at it: the tenets of religion (any religion) are good do right by yourself, do right by others, do good in the community and honor some higher being whether thats God with a capital G, whether that is Allah, whether thats a spiritual being you find in the nature, etc. The religion question in our family is an evolving one, but currently were thinking that our sons path can take on many forms, Catholicism, Buddhism, Muslim, spiritual awareness, etc. And as he grows up, and as we grow up (!), were open to wherever that may take him and us. So for our little family, an introduction to Catholicism via school is fine and thats why were looking at them. But I appreciate the fact that for many of our friends, and Im sure others, it wouldnt be appropriate.

My Bloody Valentine probably not too familiar for alot of people. I grew up listening to so many styles of music, rock, metal, punk, gothic, hip-hop, and music that was once termed alternative (90s). Anyways I have always had a special place in my heart for what is called Shoe Gazer bands like Ride, Lush, and my favorite My Bloody Valentine. I still remember the first time I saw there video for Only Shallow on MTV when they used to play videos, anyways I was instantly into them. The crazy ass sounds, and the super low mix on the vocals what was this? Why is this guys wearing a military parka with fur around the hood??? Everyone song they have is like a dream, and I really could identify with this. So of course went digging and got the earlier release t Anything, copped Glider, and even the really bad audio quality bootleg But nothing prepared me for lastnight.
It has been 16 years since My Bloody Valentine performed in LA. I didnt get the chance to see them back in the day. I got to with my friend Shane Gallagher, so we hopped in the automobile and headed out to Santa Monica. So what was the crowd gonna be like? For sure 30+ but to my surprise 40+, 50+, and even a woman maybe 60+? Anyways putting the ages aside, the crowd was all different types, and sure when everyone was younger probably not the most popular. Well I am speaking for myself on this one. Anyways, I couldnt really get into the opener, the second act totally missed while on hanging outside with Shane as he had a smoke break.

E*Rock
Everyone seemed surprised when he came out on stage wearing sunglasses over a black t-shirt on his head, but he won them over by being really energetic and entertaining. He seemed talented (I say seemed because I'm not really into that kind of computer noise electronica, so I can't really say how good he was. After awhile it all gets kind of repetitious) and, curiously enough, integrated a Wiimote into his act. I did love the end though where he used the Wiimote to (it sounded like) fight off a bad in Contra and he got attacked by all these explosions. Great last song.

Panther
Not many guys can pull of a gold lame cap in the pattern of a Louis Vuitton bag and Panther definitely isn't one of those guys. That was probably one of the reasons why he got heckled, on top of the lack of singing skill, and Justin Timberlake wannabe dancing. I felt kind of bad for him, but then he started making weird jokes about the crowd being mostly jocks or something. He was a bit of a douche. I didn't think he deserved to be heckled, but in the end, he was far worse than I had originally thought. I couldn't wait for him to get off the stage. It just got worse as the show went on. And he had this weird video playing in the background of this fake burning head. It was all so weird. I didn't get it.

Honestly the crowd was kind of crappy. There were a lot of kids there (high school kids can be so obnoxious. They always think they're the sh**. Wait until you get to college or get a real job. Jeez) and surprisingly, a large number of frat boy types. They were really rude. This Asian guy actually pushed me aside and stood in front of me. I was thinking "Are you serious? I've been standing by the front of the stage since the first act! You're TALLER than me, you ass!" I've actually taken to asking tall people, who seem to think they can just stand in front of short people about 5 minutes before the show starts, to please move aside so I can actually see. It's really unfair and completely rude to just move in front of someone, especially when you're so tall. Look around before you decide to stay. Luckily, this usually annoys those tall movers so much that they eventually leave. His dumb friend actually had the tenacity to try to shove his way to the front. I stood my ground and didn't let him through. Luckily, there were some nice (or just stubborn) people around me. I almost got knocked over by the jerk and the guy next to me made sure I was ok and didn't let him through. The guy behind me started blocking the same pushers from getting in front of him. So, that was helpful and very unusual to find such nice people at shows.

Ratatat
Finally, the big moment came. I had always thought they group just had two people, but they also had this keyboardist with crazy hair who was bobbing his head so hard to the music that I thought he would bash it into his keyboards! I never realized how much guitar was involved in their music. I always thought it was a lot of keyboard. The guitar playing, I thought, was amazing! It was like hearing an electronic symphony. I was just blown away. It was like he was doing these ridiculously long solos that went on forever. I don't know how he had the stamina to keep going for so long, but all of it sounded as good as the CD.

The Celine Experience According to Monica

I'm standing on the bow of a large, technologically advanced vessel. My eyes are shut tight. I feel the salty breeze blowing through my curly locks. A handsome blond man stands behind. He gently touches my waist and lifts me up. He sets my feet down on the railing. I feel like I'm flying. I begin to hear some music. At first the song is so soft I can barely make out the lyrics, "Every night in my dreams I see you. I feel you. That is how I know you go on," could it be? By the chorus, "Near, far, wherever you are, I believe that the heart does go on," there is no mistake.

When I open my eyes I am in the back seat of a taxi cab. Instead of fresh ocean air, the stale air conditioning is blowing beads of my own sweat into the corners of my eyes and mouth. Leonardo Dicaprio is no where in sight. It's just me, Monica, and a smelly cabby in Barranquilla, Colombia lip-syncing to Celine. When I look at the angry expression on Monica's face I am reminded of why I came to here to begin with: to escape Celine's evil empire. But no, the saggy-skinned witch is more powerful than I could have predicted. She has cast her spell across the third-world and Colombians are helpless to resist.

A few hours later I am walking through the Buena Vista on my way to Exito. I pass by my favorite store and stop in to have a look. I've been staring at the same leather purse for weeks but I'm too indecisive to buy it. Everyday I wander in, head straight for the purse and admire its design while one, two, or three employees awkwardly tail behind me. While I am contemplating purchasing it for the 14th or 15th time, I close my eyes, stretch my arms out to my sides, and smell the sea. My lips began to move, "Love can touch us one time and last for a lifetime." Could it be? But there are no words, just instrumental Celine. I am speechless, scared, and embarrassed that I am karaoking to Celine in the mall. I drop the purse and sprint out of the store. I'm frightened, Celine is persistent. First the cab, now the mall? What does she want from me?

I try to forget about the event and I don't mention it to Monica when I see her that evening. At nine, Monica picks me up in a cab and we head to Moys for Isaura's birthday celebration. Both of us look tired. When we arrive, we argue with the cab driver about the cost until we slam the door in his face. As we hurry into the swanky club we can hear him swearing behind us. Suddenly, his words are muted by a familiar sound. "You're here, there's nothing to fear, and I know that my heart will go on and on."

I finally break. Tears are pouring down my face and I strike a ballerina pose and begin to dance and sing in full volume. Leo is drawing me naked, we're making love in the backseat of a turn-of-the-century car, I'm letting go of his hand as he sinks into the ocean.

Ten years ago you watched Rose throw the hope diamond into the sea. Then you played Celine in your bedroom on repeat as you lusted over Leo (or Rose). Then you grew up and started listening to Dylan, the talking heads, Janis, and Kanye. You sold your Titanic soundtrack to a used CD store for 30 cents and tried to pretend that you only saw the movie one time. Then you moved to Colombia. The new language tires you, everything confuses you, you grasp for something familiar.

That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Monica And Rocko ....Still Ghetto Feigned

I went to check out the Bob Dylan concert the other night in Santa Monica, CA. I was so incredibly excited to see Bob perform. As a kid all I listened to was classic rock and I thought I would never have the chance to see Bob in person let alone see him perform. Well my dream finally came true, now if only I could see Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and The Doors, haha! I was given a couple VIP Family and Friends tickets so I was thinking I would really have some incredible seats! Well....I ended up being more than a little disappointed in the seating arrangements and the general VIP treatment. First parking was a nightmare and then the VIP seats were in the back since it was all standing room only and a HUGE floor space between the seats and the stage. I was stoked to see Pierce Brosnan there, hadnt seen him in a while and his wife Keeley is a huge eco activist so I really dig her. I thought Bobs performance was incredible, great vibe from the crowd and he ended with All Along the Watchtower so who could ask for more. The sound was incredibly bad but all in all I could have cared less cause it was Bob Dylan! I just dont think the Santa Monica Amphitheater is the best place to see live music but hey a dream came true so I cant complain. I thought the set was great, he chose all the right songs to play. He is in really good shape as well! I have the feeling I will be able to see him perform again and if the chance comes up I will be all over it! I guess he had not played in Santa Monica in 30 years so he wanted to play there and I was really happy to have him in my backyard! Well Im back in the studio working on my next film called "Jack and Coke", I also have my Wu Tang documentary coming out in the next month and Im really looking forward to that! I will keep you posted on any up coming shows and I should be posting lots more pics on my Flickr page. Talk soon.

Jay-Z led a parade of special guests Sunday (Aug. 3) during the Rock the Bells festival at Jones Beach on Long Island, N.Y., joining Nas for two songs close to the end of his set. Also making surprise appearances were Busta Rymes, EMPD, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch and Slick Rick.
With a live band, Nas went to another level when Jay-Z appeared for rousing versions of Black Republican from the Hip-Hop Is Dead album and from Jay-Zs album American Gangster.
A Tribe Called Quest headlined with an appearance by Busta Rhymes, who performed the Low End Theory showstopper and gave fans a short set of his own highlighted by his Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See.
Method Man and Redman delivered a great lesson in Hip-Hop 101 by bringing such guests as Slick Rick, Keith Murray and EPMD into their hour-long set. While leaving the stage, they promised not only a new duo album, Blackout II, but also a sequel to their 2001 stoner comedy How High. I, for one, can’t wait for that!
Other surprises included Monch appearing during Immortal Techniques short, politically-charged set; De La Soul appeared celebrating 20 years of the Native Tongues movement by bringing out Dres of Black Sheep to perform Flavor of the Month and a hyped version of The Choice Is Yours, followed by an appearance of Q-Tip for a rousing run through the hit cut a whole stage-load of non-performers crowding up the energetic, Ghostface and Raekwon set; and Mos Def bringing out longtime partner Talib Kweli for a memorable Black Star set and then staging a small reunion by re-inviting Monche back onstage to perform his 1999 club anthem Simon Says. Biz Markie also appeared during De La Souls set to perform his classics Just a Friend and Nobody Beats the Biz, rocking the crowd.
The only group who didnt appear with a special guest was the reunited Pharcyde. The California-based crew is planning a new studio album, its first with all original members since 1995s revered
Rock the Bells Festival stops next on Saturday (Aug. 9) in San Bernardino, Calif.

Hillary Clinton gave the speech of her life today and as she endorsed her primary opponent, she cemented her place in history. As importantly, she also shone a path for herself as a national leader for years to come.

She said: "The way to continue our fight now, to accomplish the goals for which we stand is to take our energy, our passion, our strength, and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama, the next president of the United States."

I was tough on Hillary earlier in the week. I shared the disappointment of her losing a hard fought and terribly close campaign. I thought we needed her to provide us with a bridge to move past the primary and into the General Election by acknowledging Obama's victory. Instead on election night, she announced would take her time. It doesn't matter now whether that was the right decision.

What is clear, is that she couldn't have given the speech she gave today on Tuesday night. Today, her voice was strong, her mind was certain and her back was straight. She wanted us to know she would be an unequivocal supporter for Obama. But she also wanted to say something else.

Yes, it is true she not so silently admitted, in the beginning she was trying to avoid running as a "woman." She thought she needed to prove she was Commander in Chief material instead. But in the last five months, she changed her message because she realized that people accepted her a a national leader, what they wanted was to connect with someone who understood their daily lives. She is filled with the stories of women along the campaign trail. They saw in her a woman who understands the complexities of life as a mother, a daughter, a wife and a worker all at the same time. The glue in other people's lives. Whether it was about health care, education or knowing a soldier in the war, women needed to tell her their stories. She would nod knowingly because she understood them. And she also understood that all too often a woman's dreams take a back seat to someone else's or they are filtered through a thin film of sexism that men don't see.

Hillary found a bold new public voice during this campaign. For those of us who have know her a long time, it was the Hillary we knew. The compassion, the humor and the grit.

She said: "But I am a woman and, like millions of women, I know there are still barriers and biases out there, often unconscious, and I want to build an America that respects and embraces the potential of every last one of us. I ran as a daughter who benefited from opportunities my mother never dreamed of. I ran as a mother who worries about my daughter's future and a mother who wants to leave all children brighter tomorrows."

She didn't talk about being a wife. Yet as she spoke, I couldn't help but think that among the legacies of this campaign is the certain re-branding of the "Clinton" name. It is now Hillary Clinton who is the contemporary political leader. The one whose future in the Senate and place on the national stage is more important than ever. For instance, when Barack Obama's first presidential priority is universal healthcare, it will be because of Hillary that we will understand its possibilities. What was once dubbed derisively as "Hillarycare" will now carry that moniker as a brand of honor.

We have a lot of work to do in the next several months to win back the White House. But today was Hillary's day in the sun.

"So today I'm going to count my blessings and keep on going," she said. "I will do it with a heart filled with gratitude, with a deep and abiding love for our country, and with nothing but optimism and confidence for the days ahead."

Like so many today, my heart is filled with gratitude for Hillary Clinton.

Mine too.

GLOW
FREE All Night Art Event
Featuring Music by KCRW DJs

SANTA MONICA PIER SATURDAY, JULY 19

Internationally-recognized artists will create engaging sights and sounds from dusk till dawn

GLOW is a FREE, all-night event taking over the Santa Monica pier on Saturday, July 19 from 7pm to 7am. From the sand to the sea up to the Pier and Palisades Park, there will be 20 multi-media art installations, music by KCRW DJs and much more.

A collection of international artists will transform the iconic Southern California spot into a premier art destination from dusk until dawn, with a dazzling array of effervescent sights, sounds and interactive activities.

GLOW is the ONLY event to have ever received permission to use the historic Santa Monica Pier and beach as an all-night venue and more than 25,000 people are expected to attend.

The solar-powered Ferris Wheel will host a revolving orchestra, "tumbleweeds" of recycled material will float on the ocean illuminated by LEDs, SASSAS with dublab will take over the carousel to present Tonalism, an ambient sound and projected image environment, and Shih Chieh Huang will turn the path under the Pier into Neptune's Net. Details on ALL the art projects can be found at www.glowsantamonica.com.

DJs Garth Trinidad, Raul Campos, and Jeremy Sole from Santa Monica-based public radio station KCRW (89.9Fm and KCRW.com) will provide the soundtrack on the Pier, with drawings and animation created by a collective of Tagtool artists as a backdrop.

Inspired by the wildly successful Nuit Blanche in Paris, GLOW takes its spirit from the fabled grunion that live in local waters and come ashore several times a year to spawn in the sand creating a momentary sensation of iridescence.

Santa Monica may be best known as a cosmopolitan beach community but it is also a hub of creativity. The City of Santa Monica is home to perhaps the largest concentration of creative employment in the United States -- with 43% of the adult population making a living in arts-related fields. KCRW, an internationally-recognized tastemaker for new music, broadcasts from the campus of Santa Monica College. GLOW was created as a space to celebrate imagination in the public realm.

GLOW is part of the City of San Monica's strategic plan and made possible by major funding form the Norton Family Foundation, along with the Durfee Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Starbucks Coffee Company and other generous sponsors.

Argungu is already full of visitors. The interest, however, is not this small city in Nigeria, but the event starting from the next day: Argungu Fishing Festival. What is that? you ask. Well, it began in 1934 as a fishing in the celebration of the visit of Sultan of Sokoto. The contest was so well received, it became an annual event! Other elements were included later, in 1970 and an agriculture and livestock has just been added. Usually scheduled for February this year? S festival, however, took place in March.A severe harmattan season forced the postponement. The harmattan is a cool, dry and often loaded with dust that the wind blows from the south-west of the Sahara in December through February. As we go to Argungu, strong winds still stir the dust of bare earth and sweep along like a thick, brown, wind fog. Our lips and nostrils become painful dry wind. Men in flowing robes, mounted on camels high, draw up neckpieces their turbans to cover their mouths and nostrils so that only the eyes look through the dust swirling. Motor vehicles creep along slowly until the wind dies. Soon, however, people arrive, eager to see begin. It festival opens with an exhibition of achievements in agriculture and animal husbandry. I? Take a look at the goat-skinning competition. At a signal, each participant truncates a hind leg of his slaughtered animal and insert a small hollow cylinder between skin and flesh. He then blows through the hole to inflate the whole animal, which facilitates the separation of skin from the body. The winner is able to remove skin in good condition free in three minutes! At WatersideFriday functionality and Saturday competitions at the water's edge, beginning with the Kabanci display? A number of events water in the Matan Fada river near the city. The banks of the river provide practical tracks on which spectators can stand and watch. Girls compete in the main competition fishing and canoeing courses in Hollow palm trees. The men compete in the same and other events, including the under-exploitation breathtaking contest. Competitors pop up on water, one after another, disappointed to see that others are outlasting. The winner was clocked in 4 1? 2 minutes, and maybe more have continued had it not been arrested by assistants. The Big FishSaturday anxious? S program is the culmination: the Argungu fishing competition. The rhythm of the music and drums chanters defines the atmosphere of the event. Crowds of fishermen station themselves on both sides of the river, equipped with giant gourds triangular and fishing nets. Each bottle has an open end and is used either as a buoy on the fisherman who can float or container for fish.Anticipation pushes craning among the spectators. Many wonder if this year? S catches win will be greater than 98 kg (216 lbs) of fish caught in 1979. Since last year? S festival, fishing was allowed in this part of the river. Water has become quite shallow during the dry season and is without doubt now teeming with fish.At the sound of a gunshot, the burden of fishermen begins. Wave after wave of men with their gourds and fishing nets driven by the river banks. Within minutes, the part of smoke-gray water swarms with men. A cry goes up: The first capture was made! Whenever someone nets a heavy fish, other competitors come to his rescue. The men in a patrol boat catches to be weighed and labelled. The rate increases weighing, but some catches are heavier than 30 kg (66 lbs). Many choose fish no bigger than sardines. Suddenly, one weighing over 40 kg (88 lb) is taken! Like most competitors have already left the water, the fisherman think that is the winner and champion? Gesture. Some, however, continue to fish in the hope of catching something bigger. Perseverance pays off. Before the time expires it is a cry of triumph! It is 1.3 metres (4.27 feet) Bukuiki, as he was appointed in Hausa. At 50 kg (110 lbs), it weighs much less than the record catch of 1979, but it is this year? S winner nonetheless.
